The Indian navy vessel had apparently just left a scheduled port call in Hanoi, when it was challenged by a Chinese warship to identify itself and explain its presence.</P> <P>China claims all of the South China Sea as its territory; however this claim is not recognized by any of the other nations bordering the waters, which are marked as international. According to Indian officials, any navy worldwide has the right and full freedom to transit through international waters, including those within the South China Sea.<SPAN id=more-10087></SPAN></P> <P>China however wishes to impose its own sovereignty on them. It is understood that the Indian and Vietnamese governments have sought explanations from Beijing over the matter. Anti-China protests were staged in Vietnam last month against a perceived increase in Chinese aggression within the region, which contains disputed territories and islands claimed in full or in part by China, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines.</P></DIV></BODY></HTML>
