Tawiane's 'hotel'. The roof leaked like a sieve when it rained. Pigs snuffled underneath The old and the new. The modern shed in the background is ugly, but weatherproof Early morning. Smoke rises straight through the thatched roof. Unmarried girls and menstruating women live separately. Even married men usually stay together in a longhouse, but visit their women by arrangement
Village women offer bilums (woven shoulder bags) for sale under the watchful eye of their men A visitor teachesthe kids how to play noughts & crosses (tic-tac-toe) Munkis (kids) gather around to learn about the strange foreigners Treking down to the river through sub-tropical jungle Coffee beans support almost the entire highlands cash economy
