Pre-Christian custom in Tawiane was to leave the dead on the exposed ledges of limestone cliffs

Human bones rest precariously in small hollows of the rock face Some favourite wooden drums keep the bones company These departed are certainly not alone in death. They must have been gathered after the bodies were reduced to bones. PNG religions are highly syncretic. The rock painting here seems to include German military crosses. I'm guessing. Pre-WW1 German officers did visit the site
